Albany - An 11-year-old boy turned over $3,500 to school
officials after finding a cash-stuffed envelope on the
street while walking home. He said he didn't want to get
into trouble and wasn't sure what to do with it, Albany
Detective James Miller said. If no one claims the cash
within a year, police will return it to the boy.

Vestal - Student groups plan to hike across the state to
protest a 41% tuition increase in the state university
system. The 560-mile relay, the No Tuition Hike, will
start in Long Island and Buffalo and end in Albany.
Tuesday, February 4
New York - A homeless man was arrested for allegedly
robbing at least 12 banks in Brooklyn and Queens over a
three-month period. Police said that Richard Johnson,
47, handed notes to bank tellers saying he was armed and
dangerous. The incidents prompted Police Commissioner
Ray Kelly to announce that the department would increase
efforts to prevent bank robberies.
Monday, February 3
Albany - Leaders of New York's Independence Party voted
to open their statewide primaries to all non-enrolled
voters. Party Chairman Frank MacKay said the proposal
would allow almost 2.5 million so-called independents to
vote in Independence primaries for statewide offices.
But it may take a federal lawsuit against the state
Board of Elections to implement the change. ... New York
- The first of a regular series of workshops on
alternative healing therapies will be held today for
firefighters and their spouses, many of whom have
struggled with post-traumatic stress since the Sept. 11
terrorist attacks. Programs include meditation, yoga and
other therapies to help deal with emotional stress.
About 40 people are expected to attend.

Upton - Praveen Chaudhari, a longtime scientist and
senior research manager for IBM, was named director of
the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National
Laboratory. Chaudhari will begin work April 1.
